Why our sleep experts loved it
The Staples and Co Restore Eco Latex Ortho 2000 Mattress has been designed with a unique foundation of 2000 pocket spring and is one of the more premium mattresses found in the Bensons for Beds line-up. I got hands-on with this one in-store at Bensons for Beds and it was one I was keen to try because ‘eco latex’ and ‘ortho’ can mean very different things in the real world.
The unique pocket spring system provides individual anatomic support and relieves pressure points, whilst maintaining a healthy microclimate and maintaining airflow through the mattress. Each of the 2000 pocket springs is encased in a their own 'pocket' with outer fabric encasing each spring, the result of this is that it reinforces the spring and protects it against unfavourable movement. Pressing down with my palm you can feel the springs reacting in smaller sections rather than the whole surface moving as one, which is what you want if you share a bed.
The tension of these pocket springs are extra firm, to provide great edge to edge support while providing impressive lumbar support that is considered on the specialist side of support. This level of firmness should be carefully considered and not typically recommended for people without a specialist or specific reason. Sitting right on the edge, it held me up well and didn’t feel like it wanted to tip me off, but the flip side is that lighter side sleepers are likely to feel it around the shoulder and hip.
When you lie on the bed, the latex layer will support your weight evenly, yet independently of the surrounding structure, maximising comfort and support. On my back it felt properly ‘on top’ supportive, my hips didn’t sink and my lower back felt nicely propped up, but on my side I could tell straight away it’s not going to suit everyone because it doesn’t give you that deep hug some people need for pressure relief.
The mattress is made from plenty of premium materials including 100% natural Tencel™ Fabric (produced by environmentally responsible processes), which is naturally fire-retardant and chemical-free and pairs well with the eco friendly latex for a great upper comfort layer. Running my hand across the cover it felt smooth and cool to the touch, and it has that slightly ‘dry’ Tencel feel rather than a plasticky knit. That said, if you’re expecting a thick, pillowy top, this isn’t that kind of mattress, it’s more about support than sink-in plushness.
The postural benefits of the Latex Ortho are further enhanced by the Posture Perimeter Plus system that further reinforces roll together and roll off prevention allowing you to spread out fully on the mattress. For those looking for additional orthopaedic support, you really cannot go wrong. Just be aware that extra firm plus reinforced edges can feel a bit unforgiving if you’re under about 70kg, and if you like a softer landing you’ll probably want to look at a medium tension option instead.
Reviews for the Staples and Co Restore Eco Latex Ortho 2000 Mattress are strong with a fast-amassing amount of happy customers whom love the fit-for-purpose orthopaedic feel and great quality construction. There was one niggle though, one customer was left with dipping after a few short weeks but this seems to be a one-off problem. In fact, even the one-star reviews against the Restore Eco Latex Ortho 2000 Mattress are a bit of miss-direct as the current examples were all positive suggesting accidental one-stars.
