Building Trust Through Transparency
We understand that trust must be built, and generating dependable content lies at the heart of our purpose. For this reason, we would like to transparently reveal the process behind WantMattress and its content creation, along with how we incorporate references to verified products and services.
Locating sleep and wellness information is a breeze, as it's readily available everywhere. However, discovering reliable, pertinent, and practical information can be challenging and even daunting.
WantMattress aims to change that. We produce top-notch, research-backed, and easily comprehensible sleep content, empowering you to make optimal choices for yourself and your loved ones.
We are also dedicated to assisting you in taking steps towards maintaining a better quality of sleep. At times, this involves directing you to products and services that we believe can be valuable resources on your journey to better health.
Let us explain our selection process.
1 We Do The Research
Our editorial team devotes extensive time to scrutinizing data and reviewing reader input and consumer feedback in order to comprehend our readers' needs, be it an ideal mattress for restful sleep, the perfect bed frame for a particularly modern bedroom, or essential equipment to combat snoring. Subsequently, our writers and editors embark on a thorough investigation of the finest choices, taking into account factors such as:
- Price
- Quality and Build
- Availability
- Consumer Feedback
- Our Experience
How We Build Our Assessments: While we do physically test many products when possible, we don't always test every product we review. Instead, we build thorough assessments by drawing on:
- Our Experience: Years of expertise in the sleep industry and hands-on knowledge of similar products
- Independent Reviews: Analysis of trusted third-party reviews and expert opinions from across the industry
- Customer Reviews: Aggregated feedback from real users to understand how products perform in real-world conditions
- Verified Information: Research from reputable sources across the internet, including manufacturer specifications, industry reports, and verified testing data
This multi-source approach allows us to provide well-rounded assessments of product value, comfort, and suitability-even when we haven't physically tested a specific item ourselves. Our goal is to craft content that maintains a fair and unbiased perspective, explicitly highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of the featured products.
2 We Verify and Cross-Reference
Each product and brand we feature undergoes careful evaluation by our team. We cross-reference information from multiple sources, verify claims against available data, and assess each item based on our criteria to ensure it aligns with sleep standards and our philosophy of well-being.
When we haven't physically tested a product, we're transparent about our assessment methodology. We look for patterns across independent reviews, analyze customer feedback for consistency, compare specifications with similar products we have tested, and draw on our industry knowledge to provide an informed perspective on value and performance.
Our expert-backed team does the groundwork, so you don't have to. This way, you can feel confident in making informed decisions regarding your health and sleep journey.
3 At The Forefront of Integrity
We implement a stringent advertising policy that guarantees our content remains uninfluenced by sponsors and business collaborators.
Rest assured that when you encounter a shopping link within our content, it has our full endorsement. We exclusively provide links to products, services, and resources that we believe offer value to our readers.
If you make a purchase on the retailer's website after following one of our links, we may obtain a minor portion of the revenue generated by your transaction. You can read more about this here.
When entering into a direct business partnership with a brand or retailer, our team carefully assesses those partners. This ensures that WantMattress only collaborates with organizations that:
- Maintain transparency with customers concerning product safety, quality, and effectiveness
- Adhere to all British Standards Product Conformity
- Meet the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR)
4 Understanding Our Scoring System
Every product review on WantMattress includes proprietary data points designed to give you a clear, honest picture of what you're buying. Below, we explain exactly what each metric measures, how it's calculated, and why it matters to your decision.
Review Rating
Our Review Rating is an editorially assigned score from 1 to 5, displayed as a percentage out of 100 on each product page. For example, a rating of 4.2 out of 5 appears as an 84% score. This is shown as a circular score badge and as star ratings across the site.
The rating reflects our team's overall assessment of a product, drawing on the research factors outlined in Section 1: price, quality and build, availability, consumer feedback, and our own experience. When we've physically tested a product, that hands-on evaluation carries significant weight. When we haven't, we build a thorough assessment from independent reviews, customer feedback, and verified specifications.
The Review Rating is our editorial team's considered verdict — one number that represents how we rate a product overall after weighing all the evidence. It is a qualitative editorial judgement, not an automated calculation.
Performance Indicators
Beyond the overall rating, each product is evaluated across grouped performance metrics. These are organised into categories such as Suitability and Performance, with each category containing multiple specific questions — for example, how well a mattress supports side sleepers, or how effective its motion isolation is.
Each question is scored from 1 to 5 and displayed as a star rating. These scores are derived from a combination of specification-based data points and our own hands-on experience. On the product page, you can click any metric to reveal a description explaining exactly what it measures and how it was assessed.
How we derive Performance Indicator scores:
- Manufacturer specifications and materials data
- Physical testing results (where applicable)
- Cross-referenced independent reviews
- Aggregated customer feedback patterns
- Our team's direct experience with the product or comparable products
The Suitability category assumes an average body weight. Because firmness perception varies with body type, we recommend using the Personalised Suitability Quiz (described below) for a more tailored assessment.
Radar Analysis
Our Radar Analysis chart evaluates the complete purchasing experience — not just the product itself. It plots six metrics on a radar chart, comparing each product's scores against industry baselines that represent typical performance across the UK mattress market.
The six axes are:
- Retailer (baseline: 80/100) — Overall retailer quality, including customer service, returns process, and trustworthiness
- Brand (baseline: 80/100) — Brand reputation, track record, and standing within the industry
- Guarantee (baseline: 20/100) — Warranty and guarantee quality. The low baseline reflects that many products in the market offer only minimal warranty coverage
- Sentiment (baseline: 70/100) — Aggregated customer sentiment drawn from verified reviews across multiple platforms
- Delivery Charge (baseline: 80/100) — How delivery costs compare to the market average
- Delivery Time (baseline: 60/100) — Speed of delivery compared to industry norms
Each axis is scored on a 0–100 scale. Scores below 80 are rated Average, scores between 80 and 99 are rated Good, and a perfect 100 is rated Excellent. The baseline overlay on the chart gives you immediate visual context — where the product line extends beyond the baseline, it's outperforming the market; where it falls inside, there's room for improvement.
Radar Analysis goes beyond the mattress itself — it evaluates the full purchasing experience, from brand reputation to delivery speed, so you can buy with confidence.
Personalised Suitability
Every mattress on WantMattress has a base firmness rating on a scale from Soft to Firm. But firmness is subjective — what feels medium to one person may feel firm to another, depending on body type, sleeping position, and whether you experience pain.
Our Personalised Suitability Quiz, available on each mattress product page, asks three key questions:
- Sleep position — Side sleepers generally prefer softer mattresses for pressure relief, while back and stomach sleepers tend to need firmer support for spinal alignment
- Body type — Lighter body types typically suit softer mattresses, while larger body types benefit from firmer support to prevent excessive sinking
- Back or neck pain — Those experiencing pain often benefit from firmer mattresses that provide greater support and alignment
Based on your answers, the quiz calculates an ideal firmness profile and compares it to the mattress you're viewing. A match of 70% or above means the product is likely a good fit for your needs. If the match falls below 70%, the system flags the product as potentially unsuitable and guides you toward alternatives that may serve you better.
The Suitability Quiz is personalised to you — no two results are the same. If a mattress isn't the right match, we'll help you find one that is.
