Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Silentnight Vilana Limited Edition Miracoil Mattress in-store and the first thing that struck me was how “proper” it feels for a 21cm depth mattress - it’s not one of those flimsy, bendy ones you can fold up with one hand. It’s a firm tension aimed at lower back support, and you can tell pretty quickly it’s built to keep you sitting a bit more on top of the mattress rather than sinking right in.
The mattress is perfect for those who want a firmer balance between comfort and support that will keep them on the mattress throughout the night. Lying on it on my back, my hips felt nicely held up and level, and when I rolled about I could feel the Miracoil unit pushing back in a very “traditional” way. The Miracoil springs have a soft feel to them, but still provide enough of a firm tension to keep you from rolling together in the night.
That said, if you’re a lighter side sleeper (say under about 70kg), this firmness can feel a bit unforgiving around the shoulder - I could feel pressure building there quicker than I’d like. Motion isolation is also not as tidy as a good pocket sprung mattress; when I gave it a proper shove with my hand, you get more of that connected bounce through the surface. And while the edge felt decent when I perched on the side to put my socks on, it’s not the kind of reinforced edge you get on some pricier models, so don’t expect it to feel rock solid right on the perimeter.
The Silentnight Vilana Limited Edition Miracoil Mattress has an Eco Comfort Fibre™ (eco-foam) core to ensure that you have a comfortable night's sleep. Running my hand across the damask cover, it’s got that classic, slightly grippy feel rather than anything slick or stretchy, and it does make the whole thing feel a bit more “grown up” than a basic knit cover. It is topped with a sumptuous damask cover to ensure you get a mattress that is handcrafted in the UK to the highest quality.
One thing I would say is that if you’re expecting a big, cushy top layer, you might be disappointed - it’s more supportive than it is plush. For me personally, it sits in the “good if you want firm and simple” bracket, but if you want that floating, pressure-relieving feel, I’d be looking at a pocket sprung or foam-heavy option instead.
