Why our sleep experts loved it
Parents of a young child and looking for their first mattress? Great news because the Silentnight Achieve Pocket Sprung Kids Mattress has been developed to help your child sleep better! I got my hands on this one and gave it a proper poke and lie down (yes, even though it's a kids mattress) because I wanted to see if it actually feels like a 'proper' bed, or just a thin starter mattress. This product has been specifically designed and sized for kids and their unique sleep needs, making it the perfect choice for parents who want to give their child the comfort and support they deserve.
Starting with that support layer and with this product you get an impressive 405 pocket springs, which are specifically designed to offer support that adapts to your child's movement. When I pressed down with my palm and then my elbow, you can feel the pocket springs reacting in smaller areas rather than the whole surface dipping at once, which is exactly what you want if your little one wriggles about. The Mirapocket® springs in this mattress are unique to Silentnight and are perfect for children who are wrigglers, as they provide support that moves with them, ensuring they always have a comfortable and supportive surface to sleep on. That said, 405 springs is still a kids spec, so if you're expecting the same 'dense' feel you get from an adult pocket sprung mattress, it won't feel quite as weighty or substantial. This is a huge benefit as it will help to reduce any disturbance in the night and ensure that your child can get a good night's sleep, even if they are moving around a lot in their sleep.
Onto that comfort layer and the Silentnight Achieve Pocket Sprung Kids Mattress also features two layers of adaptive fillings that provide a good degree of additional comfort and keep your child's body distanced from the springs underneath giving a great combination of support and comfort. Running my hand across the top, it feels smooth and nicely padded, not lumpy, and when I lay on my side I didn't feel the springs 'pushing back' through the comfort layer, which is a good sign for smaller, lighter sleepers. The fillings in this upper layer are made from EcoComfort Fibres™, which are designed to be breathable and keep your child comfortable throughout the night. In my experience, fibre fillings like this tend to feel a bit more 'springy' and less sink-in than memory foam, which is great for kids who run warm, but if your child loves that cuddly, slow-sinking feel, this won't give you that. This is especially important for children, as they need to stay cool and comfortable in order to get a good night's sleep. The EcoComfort Fibres™ in this product are also hypoallergenic, so parents can rest easy knowing that their child is sleeping on a mattress that is safe and healthy for them. What's more, these fibres are made from plastic bottles that are converted into a softer and more luxurious surface that remains breathable for a deeper and more refreshing night's sleep.
Onto the benefits and this product features good hypoallergenic properties that are a huge benefit for parents of children with allergies or sensitive skin. The hypoallergenic fillings in this product help to reduce the risk of your child having an allergic reaction, ensuring that they can get a good night's sleep without any discomfort or irritation.
One thing I will say though, hypoallergenic doesn't mean 'won't ever need cleaning', and with kids being kids I'd still be tempted to pair it with a decent waterproof protector because the mattress itself can only do so much if accidents happen. This is a huge relief for parents who want to provide their child with a safe and healthy sleeping environment.
So how does it all feel? Well this bed has a medium comfort grade, which is perfect for kids as it provides just the right amount of support for growing bodies, ensuring that your child has a comfortable and supportive surface to sleep on. Lying on my back, it felt nicely level and supportive through the middle, and on my side it had enough give at the shoulder without feeling like I was rolling into a dip. The medium tension in this mattress is also ideal for children who are transitioning from a cot to a bed, as it provides the support they need while they get used to sleeping in a bigger bed while accommodating both back and side sleepers. If your child is very light and only sleeps on their side, medium can still feel a touch firm at first, and if they're used to a really soft cot mattress it might take a few nights to settle in.
