Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Sealy Orwell Posturepedic Mattress in-store and spent a good while pressing into the layers and having a quick lie down, because on paper it reads like a proper ‘do it all’ mattress. One of the standout features of this product is its AlignSupport® spring technology, which is designed to sense your body shape and provide deep down support year after year. When I pushed down with my palm and then leaned my weight in, it didn’t just collapse, it pushed back in a controlled way, which is what you want from a supportive spring unit. This technology is strong and durable, thanks to its two-stage spring system and twice-tempered design. Alongside the support provided by the AlignSupport® spring technology, the Orwell Mattress also has a number of comfort layers, including a layer of MemorySense® ComfortCore™ and a layer of InfiniLux™ foam. These layers are designed to target your hips and lower back for pressure relief, while also providing a comfortable and luxurious feel, and I could feel that extra ‘fill’ under my pelvis when I lay on my back.
But the real star of the show is the Latex comfort layer. This layer adapts perfectly to your body, providing pressure-relieving support and a soothing feel that lasts all night. Lying on my side, it had that springy latex ‘lift’ rather than a slow sink, which I personally prefer, but if you’re after a big memory foam hug you might find it a bit too buoyant. On top of that, the product also has UniCased® XT edge support, which covers the entire edge of the mattress and locks into the AlignSupport® spring system for enhanced stability. I sat right on the edge like I was putting socks on and it held up well, although you still get a bit of compression (as you do with most mattresses) so don’t expect it to feel like a bench. The coil-inspired air channels in the edge support also promote breathability and give you a sturdy seating edge for getting ready in the morning or climbing into bed at night, but with the MemorySense® layer in the mix it can still sleep a touch warmer than a simpler foam-free build for some people.
Another great feature of the Sealy Orwell Posturepedic Mattress is that it is endorsed by Allergy UK and has ProShield® fibres woven into the fabric of the product. These fibres help to reduce allergens and dust mites, making it a great choice for those who suffer from allergies or are sensitive to irritants.
The Sealy Orwell Posturepedic Mattress is a single sided bed, meaning it only has one sleep surface. While this may be convenient for some people, as it is easier to care for and does not need to be flipped, it does mean you’re relying on regular rotation to keep it wearing evenly, and I always like to see proper handles at this sort of level to make that job easier. If you’re someone who loves flipping a mattress to really stretch its lifespan, this one just isn’t that type of build.
I like it for anyone who wants decent support without it feeling like a plank. With its AlignSupport® spring technology, Latex comfort layer, and allergy-reducing ProShield® fibres, it is designed to provide deep down support and pressure relief, while also keeping allergens and dust mites at bay. For me, it sits in the ‘solid all-rounder’ bracket, especially for back sleepers who want their hips held up without feeling stuck. If you’re a lighter side sleeper, you might find the medium-firm feel a bit too pushy around the shoulder, and I’d be tempted to look for something with a thicker comfort layer. If you prefer a medium-firm product or want a low-maintenance option, the Sealy Orwell Posturepedic Mattress could be a good fit.
