Pros & Cons

Here we collect tests, guides and product reviews so that you can create a picture of what others think about the product. This analysis and review is based on my experience and a decade of industry insight.

  • The Sandown Ortho Mattress offers a supportive, firm sleeping surface, ideal for those who prefer to sleep on their backs, as referenced by numerous contented customers.
  • Reviewers commonly commend the outstanding durability of this mattress, maintaining its firmness and contributing to a consistently good night's sleep over time.
  • A common positive mentioned by purchasers is the hand-tufted finish that not only adds an aesthetic value but also increases the longevity of the mattress by keeping the fillings compact and in place.
  • Customers often appreciate the hand-stitched side borders, which provide stability and prolong the lifespan of the mattress, extending its usability beyond standard offerings in the market.
  • Another key highlight shared by users is the air vents incorporated into the design, promoting breathability and facilitating temperature regulation, resulting in an always fresh and comfortable sleeping environment.
  • While the firmness of the Sandown Ortho Mattress is appreciated by back and stomach sleepers, it might not be the most comfortable choice for side sleepers or those with hourglass figures.
  • The Sandown Ortho Mattress, despite its durability, might require regular turning to maintain its initial form, which could be a bit of effort for some users.
  • Though the mattress is masterfully designed to provide premium comfort and quality sleep, the use of recycled materials for a component of the mattress might not appeal to all potential users.

Why our sleep experts loved it

We all understand the significance of getting a great night's sleep. Restful sleep is more than merely an indulgence -- it's critical to our overall well-being. Not only does it offer the obvious advantage of providing energy for the day ahead, but it also plays a crucial role in our physical health. Our brain functionality and mood directly correspond with the quality of our sleep. Consequently, a mattress should not merely be a soft surface for repose. It should be a well-designed innovation, catering to our unique body mechanics, comfort preferences, and personal health requirements. We believe the Sandown Ortho Mattress by Bensons for Beds has what it takes to cater to these diverse needs. In this review, we endeavour to critically evaluate its features, comfort level, suitability, and ultimately share customer verdicts.

How We Test

Our testing approach was anything but superficial. To ensure that we get a comprehensive understanding of the Sandown Ortho Mattress, we performed in-store tests. Our goal was to determine how well the mattress facilitated a restful and comfortable night's sleep. Consequently, while we did not trial the mattress at home, our testing at the store involved various conditions, such as height of pillows, relaxing positions, temperature conditions, and so on.

Design and Features

The Sandown Ortho Mattress prides itself on the 1000 pocket springs that individually adapt to the consumer's body movements offering premium responsive support. Its unique damask cover offers a soft, durable, and breathable sleeping surface. This mattress also boasts hypoallergenic comfort layers which are 42% recycled and perfect for sleepers who sleep hot or those who have allergies. The unique combination of firmer fillings with hand tufting offers added levels of orthopaedic support.

The reinforced edge support ensures you can use the entire surface of your mattress without sinking at the sides or corners, a perfect design attribute for those sharing the bed. Finally, the double-sided nature of the mattress with a height of 26.5 cm ensures easy maintenance, and longevity of the product, keeping the mattress as good as new for a long duration. It's no surprise the mattress also comes with a free 5-year guarantee.

Mattress Comfort

Although the Sandown Ortho Mattress leans towards the firm side regarding comfort choice, it does not compromise the overall comfort. The hand-tufted feature provides a supportive feel that contours the body regardless of the sleeping position, and the hypoallergenic comfort layer helps regulate body temperature and ensures a restful sleep uninterrupted by allergies. The damask cover extends a soft and inviting surface that makes even the firm feel of the mattress more inviting and comfortable.

Suitability

Based on my personal opinion and the documented specifications, this mattress would be best suitable for back and stomach sleepers, given its firm nature. It's designed for those needing that extra support and alignment for their spine. However, for side sleepers or people with an hourglass figure, this mattress might not be the perfect choice due to the need for more sinkage at the hip and shoulder areas.

What Customers Thought

Customer reviews demonstrate the shared opinion regarding the quality sleep and comfort the Sandown Ortho Mattress provides. People appreciated the firm support and how it helped address back-related discomforts they experienced when using other mattresses. However, there were comments from side-sleepers who felt they would have preferred something softer.

The Verdict

Given its striking similarities to other mattresses, such as the Penzance Ortho Mattress, there's nothing groundbreaking that sets the Sandown Ortho Mattress apart from its competitors. Nonetheless, it's a solid investment for those in search of orthopaedic support and a cooler sleeping experience. It may seem a little conventional in terms of functionality, but it's this very safety that gives it a dependable charm. Its sindividual pocket springs, breathable fabric, comfort layer, and hand-tufted design work harmoniously to offer a refreshingly restful good night's sleep. Although the firm feel may not serve side sleepers optimally, it is an excellent choice for back sleepers.

Honestly, loved the supportive feel of the mattress, definitely a game-changer for my back. Could do with a smidge more plushness, but overall, good value.

Prospective customers had the following questions about the product

Irene Dakin
I've read some reviews stating this mattress sags, is there any truth to this?

Answer: From the reviews, there are mixed opinions about sagging. While one person experienced problems with what they referred to as premature sagging, many other customers found the mattress to be highly comfortable, supportive and soft. Mattresses react differently to different weights, sleep styles, and use. Most customers in fact gave positive feedback on the mattress's premium comfort and support. Therefore, it seems this could be a specific case or due to the care & use of the mattress. Thanks, James

Is the pocket springs feature in this mattress beneficial for a person who shares their bed with a restless sleeper?

Answer: Yes, the 1000 individual pocket springs in the Sandown Ortho Mattress effectively absorb individual body movement which is particularly beneficial for those sharing a bed with a partner who moves a lot during sleep, as you would not be disturbed by their movements. This independent spring system ensures you both get uninterrupted rest.

I'm a side sleeper with a curvy figure. Would this mattress be suitable for me?

Answer: This Sandown Ortho Mattress is firm, offering great support, however, for side sleepers or those with an hourglass shape, this might not offer the right level of comfort. You may find the mattress too rigid leading to discomfort as there would be inadequate sinkage in the hip and shoulder areas for a cosier sleep.
