Why our sleep experts loved it
When you buy a mattress, you’re looking for something that will be comfortable and suit your needs for years to come. This is why so many people are interested in high-end mattresses. These types of mattresses tend to last longer than cheaper brands, thanks to the materials they’re made of. But how do you know if a luxury mattress is worth the price tag? Below we will dissect what makes this mattress stand out from the rest and why the Millbrook Wool Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress could be exactly what you are looking for.
Let’s start with who this mattress is suitable for and the best way to do this is to look at the quality of the components inside:
Starting with the base layer, you get an impressive 4000 pocket springs. When it comes to the base layer, pocket springs are typically regarded as the best in the industry, beating out open coil and reflex foam consistently. What’s more, the number of springs is generally a good indicator of both quality and full body contouring with 4000 being firmly on the upper high quality segment. The tension itself comes in a medium firm which may prove to be ideal for back and stomach sleepers thanks to the additional body contouring. For side sleepers, there should be an additional amount of caution as there are certain circumstances where this mattress could suit side sleepers provided they are of average or heavier build and are not particularly hourglass shaped. See, medium firm tensions do not allow as much give as softer products which means your hips and shoulders do not sink as deep in order to level the rest of your body. Provided you have a relatively lean shape , you may indeed find this medium-firm suitable.
Onto the comfort layer and the Millbrook Wool Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress features generous and deep helpings of wool in this layer making it soft to the touch while also maximizing breathability for a great all-season night's sleep that will keep you warm, but not too warm helping to maximize sleep quality and promote deeper REM sleep. An added benefit of this comfort layer is that the mattress is double sided, meaning this comfort layer appears on both sides and maximizes the durability of the product thanks to an increased surface area. Remember though, that double sided mattresses do require flipping in line with manufacturer specification. To make this process easier, Millbrook have included turning handles as standard, although it is still particularly heavy in some of the larger sizes.
So that moves us into who this product won’t suit and the list is smaller than you might first think. Those same side sleepers we commented on above should certainly be wary of a medium firm tension mattress like this, as it is right on the nose of what will be considered too firm to find the softness necessary to sink into but depending on your build and frame, this may work to your advantage. Those of lower BMI than average should definitely consider a softer mattress unless you like the feeling of increased tension and firmness and sleep on your back. Finally, the biggest slice of people that won’t find this mattress suitable are going to be those on a budget as unfortunately the price point of premium mattresses like this one do tend to sit in that upper price quadrant. We do believe the price is justified thanks to the great quality components and deep fillings on offer, but understand that many won’t be able to justify that same cost.
This brings us nicely into where the mattress competes in the market. The brand itself can sometimes be found in the mid-range but largely sees itself as a premium namesake that punches above its weight in the premium market. The result is more of the same when it comes to the Millbrook Wool Luxury 4000 Pocket Mattress which again, fits into the premium banding on comfort, quality and price.
Onto the firmness categorized on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is the softest and 10 is very firm and we would position this at a 6.5. You can definitely feel the additional firmness and support in your back when you relax on top of it, while the premium pocket springs don’t shy away from that additional spring-back motion that you get when they are depressed downward. A 6.5/10 is around about the correct number for most medium firm mattresses.
But what of customer feedback? Well we are quite fortunate with Millbrook Beds and this particular model as it has been around for quite a number of years which means we have lots of long term reviews and happy customers. To date there are an impressive 600+ reviews, many of which seem to genuinely love their product. The main positives to be taken away from what they talk about tends to be in the areas of softness and comfort, with many remarking that the extra deep comfort layer was exactly what their heart wanted, while the springs are what their back needed. The result is a good quality night's sleep for most. There were a few naysayers however, and the running theme tended to be around subjectiveness over the tension offered with some finding the product too soft, and others too firm, both of which resulted in less-than-ideal experiences. Fortunately the customer service available for this product is high and with an impressive 10-year warranty included on top, it's clear that many end up satisfied regardless.
At the time we reviewed this product, the date of delivery was typically coming in at 1 working day which is impressive as this type of mattress is normally made to order elsewhere. Same too with sizing where we found we were able to get a variety of popular UK sizes ranging from single through to super king size. The retailer is one of the main “online only” retailers (although they have just started opening stores), and so they have a host of on demand next day delivery options including weekends. What’s more, they can take away your old mattress if necessary.
