Why our sleep experts loved it
They often say that it's the little things in life that matter the most. When it comes to achieving a refreshing, rejuvenating night's sleep, this statement couldn't be truer. Among those 'little things' is your pillow. Overlooked and often under-appreciated, a truly good pillow can be the difference between waking up revitalised and refreshed, or spending the day nursing a neck sprain or back ache. We recently tested the Luna Gel Memory Pillow, an item often praised for its benefits, in our store to see if it lives up to the high expectations set by both the manufacturer and reviewers.
How We Tested
Our in-store testing process is rigorous and comprehensive. We have a dedicated space that mirrors a typical bedroom setup, allowing us to recreate the sleeping experience as realistically as possible. We tested the Luna Gel Memory Pillow over a few days in various positions: back, side, and stomach, to ensure a fair and well-rounded review. The length of our testing period was limited in the in-store environment, but we remained thorough, making notes on how the pillow moulded to different head and neck shapes, its breathability, supportiveness, and comfort.
Design and Features
The Luna Gel Memory Pillow seeks to offer a medium comfort rating, designed to balance comfort and much-needed head and neck support. Its main feature is the moulded gel memory foam, hence the nomenclature. Fringed with a 3D breathable border and encased in a hypoallergenic, removable cover, the Luna offers a fresher and supposedly cosier sleeping experience. But here's where I feel the need to interject with a healthy scepticism. From our testing, the pillow was indeed rather comfortable, certainly more so than the usual standard, but its breathability left me wanting more. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't suffocating by any means, but in terms of retaining a cool, refreshing feel throughout, I felt more could have been done.
Construction
The Gel Memory Pillow is crafted with hypoallergenic materials aimed to cater to those with sensitive skin or inherent allergies. The hypoallergenic feature is a plus and the removable cover provides further convenience. It is machine washable, further enhancing the pillow's hygiene aspect. However, the gel memory foam is where my reservations lie. The foam does conform quite nicely when you lay your head on the pillow, providing a decent level of comfort, but as someone who prefers a lower pillow, the height was quite disconcerting. Perhaps for some, this won't be an issue; but in my in-store experience, I found I was constantly adjusting my position to alleviate the strain on my neck.
Suitability
The Luna Gel Memory Pillow, I believe, is more suitable for side sleepers or those who sleep with wide shoulders due to the height they maintain from the mattress. Also, if you're someone who battles with allergies, the hypoallergenic feature is a nice point to consider. But if one shares my preference for a lower pillow, you may find the pillow’s design a bit troubling. And though it is touted as a cooling pillow, if you're someone who gets hot during the night, the Luna might not meet your freshness expectations.
What Customers Thought
The customers’ reviews of the Luna are a mixed bag. While one customer speaks highly of the pillow's support and comfort, claiming it alleviated their back and neck pain, another echoed my sentiment, finding the height of the pillow discomforting and resulting in a sore neck. One customer praised the pillow for the perfect blend of softness and firmness that gave the impression of sleeping on a cloud while enhancing their overall sleep quality. Yet, another customer persevered with the pillow, despite discomfort, due to its high price tag. As with any product, it appears the Luna has its fans and its detractors. It's essential to remember that comfort is highly personal and what works for one person may not work for another.
The Verdict
In wrapping up this review, it's clear the Luna Gel Memory Pillow presents a contentious ground. On the upside, it is comfortable and supportive, and the hypoallergenic feature is brilliant. But it's far from perfect. The height can be challenging for those who prefer a softer, lower pillow, and the cooling feature might leave you feeling lukewarm. Regardless, it's indisputable that much thought has been put into the design and construction in an attempt to cater to various sleepers. Whether it has hit the mark though remains a question that will be answered personally by those who take it home.
