Why our sleep experts loved it
I got my hands on the Rock Hard mattress through Mattress Online and, as the name suggests, it is properly 'super firm' in person. It offers orthopaedic-style support with a 23cm depth and a reflex foam build, and when I pressed my palm into the surface it barely gave way at all, which tells you straight away who this is for.
This is sold as a luxury memory foam mattress designed to relieve pressure on the shoulders, hips and back, whilst supporting the head and neck for a comfortable sleep. Lying on my back, my hips stayed nicely level and I didn't get that hammock feeling you can get on softer foams, but on my side it felt pretty unforgiving around the shoulder, especially if you're lighter in weight. If you like a bit of sink or you want that classic slow-melt memory foam hug, you might be disappointed because the feel is much more 'on top' than 'in'. Running my hand across the knitted cover it felt soft enough, and the removable cover is handy for easy cleaning, but it does add a bit of faff compared to a fixed cover and you will want to make sure it goes back on neatly so it doesn't bunch.
This Rock Hard Super Firm Mattress is also hypoallergenic. It includes turning handles so that it's easy to rotate the mattress when changing its position. The Rock Hard has been handcrafted in the UK and is single sided, meaning that the top layer houses the comfort and the bottom layer has the support, saving you the convenience of having to otherwise flip the mattress. That said, being single sided does mean all the wear is going through the same comfort face, so I'd be on it with regular rotation, and if you're after a softer 'welcome' layer, this isn't going to give you it.
