Tests & Verdict

Here we collect tests, guides and product reviews so that you can create a picture of what others think about the product. This analysis and review is based on my experience and 12+ years of industry insight.

Extra Firm comfort is typically reserved to only those who need it. Consider carefully the need for this type of tension as the benefits it can have for those who need it can be amazing, counter , those who do not need it may find it uncomfortable.

Reasonable price point for the type of quality memory foam utilised here, in particularly deep quantities.

All popular sizes and with a much faster lead time than the old Hyde & Sleep range.

Specialist mattress, consider carefully the need for such a high firmness if you are opting for the extra firm, although the firm may be a great compromise.

Why our sleep experts loved it

Normally when I look at the different mattresses across retailers ranges, I talk about the support structure and the pros and cons of each, it's almost always singular however, until today's review. The Ruby Air Memory Foam is one of the first in a "new wave" of hybrid mattresses that comes with a high density foam base with an additional support layer of next-gen memory foam.

For the top layer, the Ruby Air Memory Foam comes with that premium memory foam that is in demand right now for many. The foam is thick and luxurious and gives you an impressive sinking feeling, I frequently refer to it as "cloud like", it's a popular top layer that people seem to love. What's nice here is you have effectively got two layers of memory foam, one in the next-gen variety and one of ultra-premium softness that allows you to just sink further and further into the product.

One complaint that frequently occurs with memory foam is that it can get too hot, especially in the summer. To combat this, the Hyde & Sleep Ruby Air Mattress comes with a luxurious breathable cover that helps keep you cool. For those that do get too hot at night, consider some of the other models in the Hyde & Sleep range that feature Aurora® Foam. While the Ruby Air helps keep you cool, we found the Aurora foam beat it out when it comes to all-season coverage for hot sleepers.

More on the support layer and the tension has been dialled in at a very firm rating. This type of rating may not suit most people and should typically be considered by those who have a preference toward a much firmer type of support, or those that have been recommended a need for an orthopaedic-like sleep. The average person, especially side sleepers, should consider other products from the Hyde and Sleep range. Do note that there is a slightly softer, although still firm variety that may have wider and more mass market appeal.

Reviews for this mattress are good, with only a few short term reviews so far, paired with a market leading 100% consumer satisfaction which is where people are satisfied with their purchase after use. Typically in an industry which is so subjective and personalised (due to differing interpretations of comfort and support) we would treat anything above 85% as a fairly good indicator of a premium and polished product. That said, there are no long term reviews just yet and the sample size is still particularly low.

Good reviews all much say the same thing with people commenting on the great quality to cost and how they are now getting better and deeper nights sleep than ever before.  Other positive reviews make mention of the enhanced back and neck support found with the Ruby's very firm tension support structure.

Suitability

*Assuming average weight, suitability will vary dependant on body type, use the quiz above for a more tailored guide.
  • Back Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • The amount of support offered from a mattress will vary depending on the firmness of the tension and the type of support layer used. Based on a person of average build.
  • Side Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • If you sleep on your side you typically need a supportive tension that is not too firm, nor too soft. This is because your hips and shoulders need adequate sinkage.
  • Stomach Sleepers
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Stomach sleepers need a reasonable amount of tension in the base support layer to adequately offer body contouring and help prevent aches and pains. Results will vary based on your build.

Performance

  • Breathability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Mattresses that feature breathable materials help promote airflow and keep you cool making for a more hygienic night's sleep.
  • Turning on mattress
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Certain materials like memory foam can make it difficult to move about on the mattress while you toss and turn. Same too for pillow tops which can create a cloud like sensation which can make manoeuvrability challenging.
  • Stability
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Depending on the type of support layer in place can have an impact on stability, edge to edge support and roll together prevention. Pocket springs of a firmer tension will have better stability than open coil soft tension, for example.

Odour

  • Initial Odour
    ★★★★★
    ★★★★★
  • Materials in mattresses, particularly memory foam and rolled bed-in-a-box mattresses can have an initial odour, this is typically short term and reduces considerably within 24 hours.

I went into the Durham Dreams store to select a quality matress for my new built property. Once I told the store lady that my budget was around 700-1000 pounds for a matress, she took me to a section where they had the next generation memory foam mattresses. One matress was firm and the other one was very firm. I tried both and I felt that the firm matress was slightly soft to me. So I selected the very firm one. Mind you, I had been renting previously and all of the matresses that the landlords put in their houses were criminally bad and soft. My back would sink and hurt all the time and it was hard to get deep sleep. Unlike the terrible matresses that I had always slept in previously, these two memory foam matresses felt amazing. But I decided to go with the very firm one to counteract the horrors of sleeping in super soft matresses. The first two nights that I slept on my new very firm matress, I found it too stiff for my back. No surprise! I even thought that I made a wrong decision by picking the very firm option, when I should have selected the firm option. However, the company told me that you must try the matress for at least 30 days as your body adapts to the matress and viceversa. Indeed! Within 3-4 days I was sleeping like a KING! The matress no longer felt crazy firm. It just felt firm and insanely comfortable. Falling asleep became so much easier than ever before but the most amazing thing is that once you catch the deep sleep here, you are stuck in it. Before (when renting), I would wake up easily, and now I can constantly sleep deeply and feel very rested. To conclude, this matress has drastically improved my quality of life.

Im still in the process of adaptation, it usually takes 4-6 weeks for the body to get used to the new mattress and its been only 2 weeks since I have it, but I already noticed a positive difference between the first day and today and Ill probably will be loving it soon. I still wake up felling a bit of pain in my back but I feel the great potencial that this mattress has, its not too firm which I love it and Im starting to have the feel of hotel mattress which it was what I was looking for. Its made of very good quality materials and I feel like my money was well invested. Its certainly much better then my previous one.

I was looking for a mattress that would help with my back and pain issues, and one that would provide the right amount of space for me and my wife. We have been using a double for such a long time that sleeping was very tension-filled as we felt that there was just not enough space. With this mattress, we have all the space that we want at the comfort level that we need. The build and quality of the mattress is superb. The size and fit against the bed frame that we bot was perfect. And surprisingly, it is easy to rotate. This is a one-sided mattress. There is no flipping required.

I was initially a bit worried when we first purchased this mattress because both my wife and I suffer with bad backs and we were worried it may not been comfortable. We did try it in store but its not quite the same as sleeping on it. However, I was really surprised how comfortable this mattress is and how well I have slept since we had it delivered a month ago. My back pain has reduced significantly as a result of this mattress and I have a much more restful nights sleep. The price is also very competetive in comparison to some of the other memory foam mattresses.

All round very good but then you would expect that for the price. I know there are more expensive ones out there but I'd love to know who's buying them because even this was quite a long way beyond our maximum price range. This said, it is a gorgeous thing. Youngest son has stopped complaining about his back hurting and does seem to be sleeping better. All in all it's worth it. Whilst you might feel the financial pinch in this cost of living crisis you at least won't feel the physical pinch as you sink into a restful sleep.

I have Degenerative spondylolisthesis in my spine and I thought a orthopaedic mattress was the one I needed but after going on the machine to tell me what mattress is best for me I brought the Ruby memory foam mattress. It's really comfortable and I don't disturb my partner when I get out the bed. I still have back pain when I wake in the mornings but it's not as bad as it was. I don't think it's worth the money (899) definitely not worth the money but it's a good mattress so I'm giving it .....3

Great memory foam matteress keeps it's shape quite well and very easy to move around if you need to. Comes with 2 layers of plastic wrap to make sure it stays protected. Very comfortable and a nice step up from spring matteresses, the light weight also helps with storage beds that have to lift up. Only problem I had was a weird odour when taken out of the packaging, kind of like it was kept in the warehouse for a bit too long but this in no-way affected the quality of the matteress.

Whilst we really like this mattress we have been left with a real bad taste in our mouths. Dreams sold us the mattress at the full price, only to literally knock 20% off almost on the same day!! Even by the time it was delivered it was already reduced! - We only found out when we came to check the comments from others on here. Not very happy with dreams. Its feels quite underhand, quite sneaky! Ive never known anything like it!

We wanted a comfy yet affordable new memory foam mattress to replace our worn out one. We chose this because it has a cooling layer and it has made a huge difference to our quality of sleep. It's much deeper than our old one but that makes it more comfy for us. For the price it is very good quality and we have no regrets. We chose the firm option and it is actually very comfy and moulds well to the body.

The Hyde & Sleep Ruby Memory Foam Mattress is the most comfortable mattress we have ever had. It replaced a firm orthopaedic mattress which was ok but old technology and the Ruby is so much more comfortable, firm yet cool. When you turn it around it does not break your back as did the previous mattress. Can be recommended for anyone who wants a firm mattress but still very comfortable.

I am quite fickle when it comes to mattresses and I spent a lot of time shopping around, especially when it comes to cost and longevity. This mattress ticked my boxes because it was firm enough to support my back and get / roll in and out of, yet soft enough to be comfortable and sink into once you were in a comfortable position. I am looking forward to many years of solid sleep!
